Nairobi County Shuts Down Several Shops Over Filthy Food Handling

Image
(Photo Courtesy)  Nairobi County Government has closed down several food kiosks at Gikomba Market after finding them operating in extremely unhygienic conditions. The county also issued warnings to seven other traders, demanding immediate improvements in cleanliness. This action followed disturbing reports of fish being prepared and sold next to open urinals, sparking concerns about public health. Geoffrey Mosiria, the County Chief Officer for Environment, led the inspection along Kombo Munyiri Road, where he found dirty food areas putting consumers at risk. “We saw vendors selling fish in areas that were clearly unfit. Some were even working close to open urinals. This is not acceptable. We are taking strict action,” said Mosiria. The inspection also found that mutura, a popular Nairobi delicacy, was being sold under equally dirty conditions. The county shut down two kiosks that were selling both mutura and fish in unhealthy environments. Mosiria warned that any trader who continu...

DIG Eliud Lagat Faces Private Prosecution Over Albert Ojwang’s Death

Image
(Photo Courtesy: DIG Eliud Kipkoech)  Deputy Inspector General of Police Eliud Kipkoech Lagat is facing a new legal challenge after human rights activists filed a petition at Milimani Law Court seeking private prosecution against him.  The petition accuses investigative agencies of failing to properly investigate the death of Albert Omondi Ojwang. The petitioners want the court to allow private prosecution of DIG Lagat for the alleged murder of Ojwang. They claim the police investigation was corrupt and biased, especially after DIG Lagat’s involvement in related proceedings. On June 9, Inspector-General Douglas Kanja confirmed that DIG Lagat was the complainant in a case that led to Ojwang’s arrest in Homa Bay over allegations of false publication.  Ojwang’s social media account, with over 13,000 followers, was said to have published unsubstantiated claims accusing the DIG of corruption. Ojwang died shortly after his arrest under unclear circumstances, sparking public out...

June 25 Is Not a Public Holiday, Government Spokesperson Mwaura Clarifies

Image
(Photo Courtesy: Isaac Mwaura)  Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura has confirmed that June 25 will not be recognised as a public holiday, dismissing demands by opposition leaders to mark the day in honour of youths who died during the 2024 Gen Z protests. Speaking during the Sema na Spox session on Tuesday night, Mwaura urged Kenyans to carry on with their daily duties, stating clearly that no holiday has been declared for June 25.  He emphasised that if the date falls on a weekday, it remains a regular working day. Mwaura criticised calls by opposition figures, including former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, who had urged Kenyans to stay away from work to commemorate the tragic events of June 25, 2024.  The spokesperson termed the move as a divisive political tactic meant to revive past unrest. He further stated that using a day of national grief to push political agendas is inappropriate, adding that the country must focus on progr...

Image
(photo courtesy: Albert Ojwang)  Kenyans have shown massive support following the death of blogger Albert Ojwang, who died in police custody at Central Police Station, Nairobi, on Sunday, 8 June 2025. On Tuesday, comedian Eric Omondi shared Ojwang’s father’s M-Pesa number.  Within 11 minutes, Kenyans began sending donations. In just three hours, the account reached its maximum limit of Ksh500,000, leaving many unable to complete their transactions. Eric Omondi confirmed the fast response, saying the phone was full shortly after his video was posted.  Social media was filled with screenshots of successful payments and messages of solidarity. M-Pesa allows a maximum account balance of Ksh500,000 and a maximum transaction of Ksh250,000.  Due to the high number of contributions, Omondi provided an alternative number and encouraged the use of Pochi La Biashara, a Safaricom service that bypasses standard wallet limits. Albert Ojwang left behind a three-year-old son. Omondi...

“Tutarudi Parliament Kuosha Vyombo”—Kenyans Warn the Political Class Against Passing the Flawed Finance Bill 2025

Image
(Photo Courtesy: Screen grab of the man warning MPs in a Video)  A video of a Kenyan man posted on X (formerly Twitter) has sparked public anger, as he warns politicians against passing the Finance Bill 2025.  In the clip, he says, “Tutarudi Parliament kuosha vyombo,” meaning, “We will return to Parliament to wash the dishes.”  The phrase is now trending online as a symbol of resistance. Kenyans are using the slogan to remind leaders of the deadly protests that erupted in 2024 over harsh tax proposals.  Many citizens now fear that the 2025 Bill could bring back similar economic struggles if passed in its current form. The online community is strongly urging Members of Parliament to reject the Bill, saying it is unfair and burdens ordinary citizens with more taxes.  Social media users accuse the political class of ignoring the high cost of living and joblessness affecting millions of Kenyans. Some users have warned that if the government pushes ahead with the Bil...

“You took an innocent man from his dad only to kill him” — Babu Owino Blames DIG Eliud Langat for Albert Ojwang’s Death

Image
(Photo Courtesy: Embakasi East MP Babu Owino)  Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has publicly blamed Deputy Inspector General Eliud Langat for the death of 31-year-old Albert Ojwang, who died while in police custody.  According to Owino, Albert was innocent and should not have been arrested in the first place. Albert was taken by police in Homa Bay on 7th June 2025 after he allegedly posted false information about a senior police officer online.  He was then transported to Nairobi, nearly 400 kilometres away. Days later, Albert was found dead at Central Police Station. Police claimed that Albert died after hitting his head on a wall inside the cell.  But Babu Owino strongly disagreed with that explanation.  He believes Albert was murdered and has demanded that DIG Eliud Langat and others involved be arrested and charged with murder. “You took an innocent man from his dad only to kill him. Shame on you!” Owino said in a statement shared online.  He accused the pol...

Image
(Photo Courtesy: Person filling petrol into a car)  Kenya is set to begin commercial oil production by the end of 2026, Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi has confirmed.  The government is eager to move beyond exploration to fully develop the Turkana oil fields, a key step for the country’s energy sector. The Lokichar Basin in Turkana, known for its significant oil reserves, has faced slow development despite years of exploration.  The exit of British company Tullow Oil in April created uncertainty about the project’s future.  However, Gulf Energy Ltd is finalising the purchase of Tullow’s Kenyan assets, bringing new hope. Speaking on NTV, Wandayi said Gulf Energy is preparing the necessary financial and technical resources to advance the project.  Once the government approves their Field Development Plan, commercial production will begin, with the first oil expected to be exported by late 2026. Wandayi explained why Kenya has not built a refinery, stating t...

Chief Government Pathologist Dr Johansen Oduor Steps Down from Albert Ojwang’s Autopsy Over Family Ties

Image
(Photo courtesy)  Chief Government Pathologist Dr Johansen Oduor has officially withdrawn from carrying out the post-mortem examination on Albert Ojwang, which was scheduled for today. Dr Oduor stated that he will not be involved in the autopsy because the late Albert Ojwang belongs to his extended family.  Due to this close family connection, he explained that it would not be professional or appropriate for him to proceed with the examination. This sudden development was revealed today, causing a delay in the planned autopsy.  The family of the deceased, along with authorities, will now have to arrange for another qualified pathologist to conduct the post-mortem. Dr Oduor has served in many high-profile cases in Kenya and is widely respected in his field.  His decision to step aside is seen as a move to avoid conflict of interest and to maintain transparency in the investigation. Albert Ojwang’s death has drawn public interest, and the results of the autopsy are exp...

Emotions Run High as Kenyans Mourn Albert Ojwang at City Mortuary

Image
Tears flowed freely at City Mortuary in Nairobi as scores of Kenyans gathered around the lifeless body of digital content creator Albert Ojwang.  The crowd, gripped by pain and anger, broke into the National Anthem, creating an emotional scene that left many in silence. Ojwang was arrested on Saturday in Homa Bay and later transferred to Central Police Station in Nairobi over alleged defamation of Deputy Inspector General Eliud Lagat.  By Sunday morning, he was reportedly found unconscious in his cell and rushed to Mbagathi Hospital, where he was declared dead. But the family is not convinced by the police version.  A postmortem conducted on Monday revealed disturbing injuries—swelling on the head, bruises on the nose and ears, blood in the mouth and nostrils, and wounds on his hands and shoulders—raising suspicions of torture. Kenyans are demanding answers. Protesters blocked roads near the mortuary, calling for justice and the resignation of senior government officials,...

Kisii Blogger Kelvin Moinde Freed After Accusations by Deputy IG Eliud Lagat

Image
(photo courtesy)  The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) has announced the release of Kisii-based blogger Kelvin Moinde.  He had been arrested over the weekend for allegedly publishing false information on social media. Moinde was taken into custody in Kisii on Saturday, 7 June 2025, and moved to Kamukunji Police Station in Nairobi.  Officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) arrested him, claiming he had made negative posts about Deputy Inspector General of Police, Eliud Lagat. However, on Monday, 9 June 2025, the ODPP said on their official X account that there wasn’t enough evidence to charge Moinde.  DPP Renson Igonga reviewed the investigation file and found no valid reason to proceed with a case against him. Interestingly, Moinde’s arrest came on the same day as that of Albert Ojwang, another social media figure. Ojwang was picked up in Homa Bay and taken to Central Police Station in Nairobi.  Police said he injured hi...

Image

"When I Break Up with a Boyfriend, Do You Ever Hear Me Mention His Name? These Men Going Around Mentioning Ruto Should Be Ashamed" — Karen Nyamu

Image
(Photo Courtesy: Karen Nyamu in past Event)  Nairobi Senator Karen Nyamu has stirred up political waters once again, this time by taking aim at leaders who constantly involve President William Ruto in their political feuds. Speaking candidly during a recent event, Nyamu likened their behaviour to obsessively mentioning an ex after a breakup — something she says she never does. Nyamu’s Sharp Jibe at Male Politicians In a bold statement, Nyamu asked: “When I break up with a boyfriend, do you ever hear me mention his name?” She continued, “These men going around mentioning Ruto should be ashamed.” The senator’s remarks appeared to target politicians—mainly from the opposition—who have repeatedly accused Ruto of meddling in their affairs or causing instability within their camps. Her comparison, though unorthodox, has gained traction on social media where many have weighed in, some supporting her stance and others questioning her tone. A Message to Grown Men in Politics Nya...

His family was not informed about his whereabouts. He was later traced to Kamukunji Police Station in Nairobi, hours after his sudden disappearance.  The secretive way in which he was taken has raised alarm, with many Kenyans describing it as an abduction rather than a lawful arrest. This incident adds to growing fears of alleged abductions targeting government critics.  Civil rights groups and concerned citizens say this is not an isolated case, and claim there is a pattern of influencers and bloggers being secret...

Image
(Photo Courtesy: Kirinyaga Woman Representative Njeri Maina)  Kirinyaga Woman Representative Njeri Maina has expressed disbelief after Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi donated Ksh145 million in an empowerment drive, as public schools across Kenya continue to struggle with severe funding shortages. During the event in Uasin Gishu County, Sudi handed out goods worth Ksh45 million, including 100 motorcycles, 400 sewing machines, 500 car wash machines, maize milling equipment, milk cans, and water tanks.  He also led a fundraiser that raised Ksh100 million for local development. Sudi claimed the money came from personal sources, not public funds. However, Maina raised serious concerns, asking why leaders were spending such large amounts on donations while key sectors like education were in crisis.  “Ksh145 million donations, yet free education is where we draw the line,” she said. Her comments came shortly after Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba told Parliament that only...

Vehicles To Be More Expensive in Kenya After New Law Takes Effect, KRA Confirms

Image
(Photo Courtesy: Vehicles)  The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has officially announced that vehicle prices in Kenya will rise significantly from 1st July 2025.  This is due to the implementation of the new Finance Act 2024, which introduces a fresh tax calculation method based on the Current Retail Selling Price (CRSP) system. Under the updated CRSP system, taxes on imported vehicles will now be determined using the current market price of each car model, instead of the older, lower valuation estimates.  This shift will result in higher import duty and excise duty for most used vehicles, directly affecting car importers and everyday buyers across the country. KRA confirmed that the import duty has increased from 25% in 2019 to 35% in 2025. Additionally, excise duty for some models has jumped to 35%, up from a previous maximum of 30%.  This means that importing cars into Kenya will become more costly, making new and used cars less affordable for many Kenyans. The revi...

Treasury Officials Ordered to Refund Ksh39M in Fake Allowance Scandal

Image
(Photo Courtesy: Treasury Building In Nairobi)  Two senior officials at the National Treasury have been caught unlawfully pocketing Ksh39.1 million by awarding themselves fake allowances.  The money was received without legal approval and against existing rules on government payments. According to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), the two misused outdated and revoked circulars to claim task force, entertainment, facilitation, and extraneous allowances.  These circulars had already been replaced, meaning the payments were not allowed under the current laws. Investigations revealed that between January 2020 and June 2022, the officials received overlapping allowances without the consent of the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC), which is responsible for setting and approving all public officers’ payments.  The two also used fake and duplicated circulars to enrich themselves unlawfully. The High Court, led by Lady Justice Lucy Mwihaki, ruled that...

These fake documents were allegedly used to change their medical details at the hospital. One of the victims had been promised Ksh1.2 million for donating his kidney. But in the end, he only got Ksh50,000 before the surgery and Ksh400,000 after—totalling Ksh450,000.  The rest of the money was never paid.  Details of the second victim’s payment were not disclosed, but both victims are said to have been threatened and bribed to keep quiet.
