(photo courtesy: Albert Ojwang)  Kenyans have shown massive support following the death of blogger Albert Ojwang, who died in police custody at Central Police Station, Nairobi, on Sunday, 8 June 2025. On Tuesday, comedian Eric Omondi shared Ojwang’s father’s M-Pesa number.  Within 11 minutes, Kenyans began sending donations. In just three hours, the account reached its maximum limit of Ksh500,000, leaving many unable to complete their transactions. Eric Omondi confirmed the fast response, saying the phone was full shortly after his video was posted.  Social media was filled with screenshots of successful payments and messages of solidarity. M-Pesa allows a maximum account balance of Ksh500,000 and a maximum transaction of Ksh250,000.  Due to the high number of contributions, Omondi provided an alternative number and encouraged the use of Pochi La Biashara, a Safaricom service that bypasses standard wallet limits. Albert Ojwang left behind a three-year-old son. Omondi...

“You took an innocent man from his dad only to kill him” — Babu Owino Blames DIG Eliud Langat for Albert Ojwang’s Death

(Photo Courtesy: Embakasi East MP Babu Owino)  Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has publicly blamed Deputy Inspector General Eliud Langat for the death of 31-year-old Albert Ojwang, who died while in police custody.  According to Owino, Albert was innocent and should not have been arrested in the first place. Albert was taken by police in Homa Bay on 7th June 2025 after he allegedly posted false information about a senior police officer online.  He was then transported to Nairobi, nearly 400 kilometres away. Days later, Albert was found dead at Central Police Station. Police claimed that Albert died after hitting his head on a wall inside the cell.  But Babu Owino strongly disagreed with that explanation.  He believes Albert was murdered and has demanded that DIG Eliud Langat and others involved be arrested and charged with murder. “You took an innocent man from his dad only to kill him. Shame on you!” Owino said in a statement shared online.  He accused the pol...

(Photo courtesy)  Chief Government Pathologist Dr Johansen Oduor has officially withdrawn from carrying out the post-mortem examination on Albert Ojwang, which was scheduled for today. Dr Oduor stated that he will not be involved in the autopsy because the late Albert Ojwang belongs to his extended family.  Due to this close family connection, he explained that it would not be professional or appropriate for him to proceed with the examination. This sudden development was revealed today, causing a delay in the planned autopsy.  The family of the deceased, along with authorities, will now have to arrange for another qualified pathologist to conduct the post-mortem. Dr Oduor has served in many high-profile cases in Kenya and is widely respected in his field.  His decision to step aside is seen as a move to avoid conflict of interest and to maintain transparency in the investigation. Albert Ojwang’s death has drawn public interest, and the results of the autopsy are exp...

Ojwang was arrested on Saturday in Homa Bay and later transferred to Central Police Station in Nairobi over alleged defamation of Deputy Inspector General Eliud Lagat.  By Sunday morning, he was reportedly found unconscious in his cell and rushed to Mbagathi Hospital, where he was declared dead. But the family is not convinced by the police version.  A postmortem conducted on Monday revealed disturbing injuries—swelling on the head, bruises on the nose and ears, blood in the mouth and nostrils, and wounds on his hands and shoulders—raising suspicions of torture. Kenyans are demanding answers. Protesters blocked roads near the mortuary, calling for justice and the resignation of senior government officials,...
