Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has unveiled a fresh urban renewal project aimed at transforming nine key estates in the city.
The move comes in response to Nairobi’s fast-growing population and the urgent need for better housing.
While addressing a church gathering in Makadara, Sakaja announced that the redevelopment will start with Woodley, Kariobangi, Ziwani, Bahati, and Jericho.
These estates will be redesigned with new, modern housing to replace old structures.
He also confirmed that Lumumba, Bondeni, Buruburu, and parts of Embakasi will undergo the same process.
The goal is to increase the number of housing units while ensuring that residents have access to affordable and quality homes.
As an example, Sakaja mentioned that in Woodley Estate, 43 old houses will be replaced with 1,975 new ones.
He said Nairobi cannot move forward if some people insist on keeping outdated homes while others struggle to find housing.
This project was first posted on the Nairobi County website.
It explained the county’s plan to construct affordable apartments and hold consultations with residents in the listed estates.
Sakaja also raised concerns about long-term rent defaulters living in county-owned houses. Some tenants reportedly haven’t paid rent for over 10 years, which he says affects service delivery.
President William Ruto backed the renewal idea but urged Sakaja not to forcefully evict anyone. Instead, he encouraged open talks with affected tenants to find fair solutions.
The redevelopment of these nine estates is expected to give Nairobi a new look, provide better living conditions, and ease the housing shortage in the city.
