The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) has announced the release of Kisii-based blogger Kelvin Moinde.
He had been arrested over the weekend for allegedly publishing false information on social media.
Moinde was taken into custody in Kisii on Saturday, 7 June 2025, and moved to Kamukunji Police Station in Nairobi.
Officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) arrested him, claiming he had made negative posts about Deputy Inspector General of Police, Eliud Lagat.
However, on Monday, 9 June 2025, the ODPP said on their official X account that there wasn’t enough evidence to charge Moinde.
DPP Renson Igonga reviewed the investigation file and found no valid reason to proceed with a case against him.
Interestingly, Moinde’s arrest came on the same day as that of Albert Ojwang, another social media figure. Ojwang was picked up in Homa Bay and taken to Central Police Station in Nairobi.
Police said he injured himself by hitting his head on a wall and later died while in custody.
His death has sparked public outrage and demands for justice.
According to Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, Ojwang was also being investigated for allegedly defaming DIG Lagat online.
Kanja insisted that Ojwang was not harmed by officers and said the DIG had every right to make a complaint.
Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua later called for Lagat’s suspension, saying he was running two police stations without Kanja’s knowledge. Gachagua claimed these stations had become torture centres and blamed the transfer of Ojwang from Homa Bay to Nairobi for his death.
The matter continues to draw nationwide attention as Kenyans seek answers and accountability.
