Emotions Run High as Kenyans Mourn Albert Ojwang at City Mortuary

Tears flowed freely at City Mortuary in Nairobi as scores of Kenyans gathered around the lifeless body of digital content creator Albert Ojwang. 

The crowd, gripped by pain and anger, broke into the National Anthem, creating an emotional scene that left many in silence.

Ojwang was arrested on Saturday in Homa Bay and later transferred to Central Police Station in Nairobi over alleged defamation of Deputy Inspector General Eliud Lagat. 

By Sunday morning, he was reportedly found unconscious in his cell and rushed to Mbagathi Hospital, where he was declared dead.

But the family is not convinced by the police version. 

A postmortem conducted on Monday revealed disturbing injuries—swelling on the head, bruises on the nose and ears, blood in the mouth and nostrils, and wounds on his hands and shoulders—raising suspicions of torture.

Kenyans are demanding answers. Protesters blocked roads near the mortuary, calling for justice and the resignation of senior government officials, including DIG Lagat.

 Others took to social media, posting emotional tributes and condemning what they believe is a cover-up.

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has now launched an investigation. Police officers who were on duty at Central Police Station during Ojwang’s detention have since been interdicted, according to Inspector General Douglas Kanja.

Albert Ojwang’s death has triggered a national outcry, especially among the youth. The powerful image of his body surrounded by mourners singing the National Anthem has become a symbol of the public’s grief—and a call for justice.
