Kirinyaga Woman Representative Njeri Maina has expressed disbelief after Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi donated Ksh145 million in an empowerment drive, as public schools across Kenya continue to struggle with severe funding shortages.

During the event in Uasin Gishu County, Sudi handed out goods worth Ksh45 million, including 100 motorcycles, 400 sewing machines, 500 car wash machines, maize milling equipment, milk cans, and water tanks.

He also led a fundraiser that raised Ksh100 million for local development. Sudi claimed the money came from personal sources, not public funds.

However, Maina raised serious concerns, asking why leaders were spending such large amounts on donations while key sectors like education were in crisis.

“Ksh145 million donations, yet free education is where we draw the line,” she said.

Her comments came shortly after Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba told Parliament that only half of the budgeted funds for public schools had been released this year.

He warned that free primary education could soon be at risk due to ongoing financial challenges.

Maina further questioned why the same level of financial commitment wasn’t being directed towards supporting schools or creating local manufacturing jobs for unemployed youth.

“It’s shocking that such donations are possible, yet our schools are collapsing,” she added.

The incident has sparked debate across the country, with many Kenyans asking why schools are underfunded while politicians make multi-million-shilling donations.

This rising concern highlights a growing gap between government priorities and the needs of ordinary citizens, especially in education.
