Taita Taveta Tragedy: KDF Officer, Brother, and Child Die in Horror Crash After Funeral

What began as a somber journey home from a burial turned into a nightmare for a family in Taita Taveta. A Kenya Defence Forces officer, his brother, and a young child died in a tragic road accident that has left an entire community in mourning.

The accident occurred along the winding Wongonyi-Ghazi road as the family was returning from a funeral. According to initial reports, Oliver Mwasy, the KDF officer, was behind the wheel of a white saloon car when it lost control under unclear circumstances. He died instantly. His brother and the child later succumbed to their injuries while being rushed to hospital.

Local witnesses say the vehicle veered off the road before overturning multiple times. Several other passengers, believed to be relatives, survived the crash but are currently receiving treatment for serious injuries. Police are yet to confirm the exact number of occupants.

Residents and friends took to social media with messages of grief and disbelief. “He was always committed to service,” wrote one colleague. “This is too painful to process.” Local leaders who visited the family also called for urgent upgrades to rural road infrastructure to help prevent similar tragedies.

The Kenya Defence Forces is expected to release a formal statement once investigations are complete. Meanwhile, area police have launched a probe to establish whether speed, mechanical failure, or road conditions played a role.

No official funeral arrangements have been announced by the family, who remain in shock.

As tributes continue to pour in, questions remain over what exactly caused the accident and whether it could have been prevented. Authorities are urging any witnesses to come forward as investigations continue into what may be another avoidable loss on Kenya’s rural roads.
