A wave of laughter swept across Kisumu as Dr Mercy Mwangangi cheekily reminded locals of a promise they once made — to help her find a husband. With humour and charm, she turned a civic education event into a nostalgic moment that left even top government officials chuckling.
While leading a sensitisation forum on the new Social Health Authority (SHA), Mwangangi recalled a 2021 visit she made to the region alongside Raila Odinga, during which residents pledged to help her get a husband. “I came here with Baba looking for a husband and left empty-handed,” she said, adding, “Maybe I didn’t pay dowry. Today, I’ve brought my dowry — the SHA.”
Mwangangi, who was appointed SHA CEO in April, urged Kisumu locals and Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o to finally fulfil the three-year-old vow. “Please help me complete this mission,” she joked, drawing laughter from Health CS Aden Duale and PS Ouma Oluga present at the event.
The SHA head also used the occasion to drum up support for universal health insurance registration. She called on citizens to embrace the new system, terming it a game-changer in healthcare access across the country.
Mwangangi’s lighthearted speech sparked mixed reactions online. Some social media users praised her energy, while others questioned her current role compared to her handling of the COVID-19 pandemic. “She is a vibe,” one posted, while another lamented, “She was so professional before joining this government.”
Despite the cheers and viral reactions, it remains unclear if Kisumu will ever fulfil its matrimonial promise. For now, Dr Mwangangi continues to deliver policy — and punchlines — in equal measure. Whether love will follow health remains to be seen.
