"I Can't Go Back There!" Karua Breaks Silence on 2027 Speaker Role Rumours

Whispers of a power deal within the opposition have stirred political waters, but Martha Karua is having none of it. A new claim suggesting she could be Speaker of the National Assembly in 2027 has been firmly shut down by the seasoned politician.

Karua, who leads the People's Liberation Party (PLP), dismissed the alleged arrangement as baseless speculation. Speaking on Ramogi Radio, she clarified that no formal discussions have taken place among the opposition principals regarding who will represent the coalition in 2027. “The lineup I saw is simply someone’s opinion,” Karua said, adding that their coalition has a structured approach involving technical teams to craft their agenda and strategy.

Rejecting any interest in parliamentary leadership, Karua pointed to her two decades of service as Gichugu MP, insisting that her legislative days are behind her. “I can’t go back to Parliament in any capacity,” she said. “Even being an MCA now would be enough.”

Reports had suggested that Kalonzo Musyoka would be the coalition’s presidential candidate, with Fred Matiang’i or Eugene Wamalwa as running mate. Gachagua and Karua were said to be in line for powerful roles like Prime Minister and Speaker.

But Gachagua too poured cold water on the speculation. Speaking from Boston, the embattled DCP leader alleged that the rumour was planted by the National Intelligence Service (NIS) to divide the opposition. Despite facing an unresolved impeachment case, Gachagua maintains he is the strongest candidate to face off with Ruto.

With no official lineup in place, internal talks still underway, and Karua’s firm stance, the opposition’s true 2027 game plan remains locked behind closed doors. Whether these denials signal disarray or strategic secrecy is a question yet to be answered.
