A storm is brewing in Kenya’s political arena after Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna dropped a bombshell during a televised interview. With a confident tone, he dismissed Rigathi Gachagua as irrelevant, declaring that his impeachment disqualifies him from the 2027 race.
Appearing on Citizen TV’s #CitizenExplainer, Sifuna insisted that Gachagua’s name shouldn’t even be in the conversation. “Once someone is impeached, that’s the end,” Sifuna said, questioning why the media and politicians are still treating Gachagua as a contender. He went further, calling Gachagua a distraction who may unintentionally benefit the opposition.
Sifuna argued that Gachagua is weakening the Mt Kenya base that propelled Ruto to victory in 2022. According to him, ODM’s strategy doesn’t depend on winning the mountain—it only depends on Ruto losing it. If Raila maintains his 2022 numbers and Ruto loses grip on central Kenya, Sifuna believes State House will be within reach.
The remarks have stirred reactions, with some political observers calling it premature while others say Sifuna is simply laying bare ODM’s quiet strategy. His statements come just weeks after Gachagua was ousted through a controversial parliamentary vote, triggering a debate over whether he can legally run for president.
Neither Ruto nor Gachagua has publicly responded to the comments. However, insiders from UDA hint that the former DP is preparing a legal challenge to contest his disqualification and reclaim his political standing.
Meanwhile, the ODM camp seems content watching the rift widen. But one question lingers: will Gachagua fight his way back, or has Sifuna accurately read the end of his chapter?
As 2027 approaches, the chessboard is shifting—and the next move could redefine Kenya’s political future.
