Newly released CCTV footage has sparked public outrage following the death of teacher and social media influencer Albert Ojwang, who died in police custody.
The footage from Mbagathi Hospital shows that three police officers arrived with Albert’s body and stayed inside their vehicle for over 20 minutes before finally moving him into the hospital.
Doctors later confirmed that he was already dead when brought in.
The video clearly indicates that the officers were aware Albert had already died, and their decision to take him to hospital appears to have been an attempt to cover up the truth.
The footage shows the officers wheeling his lifeless body into the hospital, raising serious concerns about what happened to him while he was in police custody.
Alongside this, a worrying twist has emerged. Investigations have revealed that CCTV footage from the Nairobi Central Police Station, where Albert was being held, was deleted.
A technician named Kelvin Mutava, who had helped install the CCTV system, admitted to being paid KSh3,000 to tamper with the system.
He later found that the digital video recorder (DVR) had already been formatted, erasing all footage from June 6 and 7—just before Albert was taken to the hospital.
According to the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA), the DVR system was interfered with on June 8, and the original recordings were wiped.
This discovery led to the arrest of Chief Inspector Samson Talam, the officer in charge of Central Police Station, who was tracked down in Eldoret and taken to Nairobi for questioning.
As investigations continue, the public is demanding justice for Albert Ojwang, with calls for accountability growing louder across the country.
