"We’ve Stopped Trying": Officer Exposes Untouchable George Ruto-Linked Matatus in Nairobi

Recklessly speeding through Nairobi streets with sirens blaring and no number plates, certain matatus seem to operate beyond the law. A police officer has now revealed the chilling reason why no one dares to stop them.

Speaking anonymously to The Standard, a traffic officer stationed in Nairobi described an entrenched culture of fear and protection surrounding matatus linked to George Ruto, son of President William Ruto. “If you touch them, you’ll either be redeployed or embarrassed by your bosses,” the officer said. “These vehicles enjoy more freedom than even government ambulances.”

Matatus operating under the names Matrix, Manifest, and Mood have repeatedly been spotted violating traffic rules—overspeeding, picking passengers in illegal zones, lacking number plates or inspection stickers. Several of the vehicles are allegedly registered through proxies such as Kenneth Rono, a trusted associate of George Ruto.

According to investigations by The Standard, the Manifest fleet was once listed under Rono’s company. It now reportedly runs without valid registration plates, raising serious questions about enforcement and accountability.

Motorists Association of Kenya Chairman Peter Murima criticised both NTSA and police for allowing impunity to flourish. “The Minister of Roads must be called out. NTSA must enforce rules or resign,” Murima said, urging EACC to investigate the state officials shielding these rogue fleets.

Despite repeated public complaints, NTSA and the traffic police command have remained silent, failing to issue any comment by press time. Meanwhile, the city remains at the mercy of these matatus, with daily reports of violent altercations and dangerous driving.

As outrage grows, many are asking: who really controls the roads of Nairobi—and what will it take to restore order?
