UDA Governor Breaks Ranks After Jayne Kihara’s Arrest Sparks Outrage in Naivasha

Shock gripped Naivasha on Thursday morning after detectives stormed the home of area MP Jayne Kihara and whisked her away in an unmarked vehicle. But what followed has shaken the political ground even more—a vocal UDA governor openly questioning the motive and timing of her arrest.

Kihara, a staunch ally of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, was first detained at Naivasha Police Station before being transferred to DCI headquarters. Authorities claim she ignored a police summons over alleged incitement and disrespect of a public officer during a heated rally. But her supporters believe the arrest has little to do with law and more to do with internal political wars.

The 72-year-old legislator, who suffers from a chronic back condition, was reportedly denied access to her medical support belt upon arrest. This detail has stirred national concern about her well-being. Governor Mutahi Kahiga of Nyeri added fuel to the fire when he took to social media, urging law enforcers to consider Kihara’s health and past contribution to public service.

Kahiga’s statement came as a surprise to many within the ruling coalition, with political analysts noting that cracks may be forming inside UDA ranks. Several residents in Naivasha also took to the streets briefly, demanding her immediate release or proper medical attention.

The DCI has yet to issue a comprehensive briefing on the charges or their evidence. Meanwhile, Kihara remains in custody.

With UDA insiders now criticising state actions and Kihara’s health in question, the line between justice and political vengeance is becoming blurred. Kenyans are watching closely, wondering—was this really about the law, or something far deeper within Kenya Kwanza’s inner walls?
