Things Turn Messy for Sifuna as ODM Calls Emergency Meeting to Address his Government Hard-hitting Remarks

Tensions are rising within ODM after Secretary General Edwin Sifuna’s sharp criticism of the Kenya Kwanza government and his own party’s alliance. The once smooth relationship between Sifuna and ODM leadership now faces a major test.

Sifuna’s recent interview where he openly questioned the collaboration between ODM and UDA has sparked anger among party loyalists. George Aladwa, Makadara MP and Raila Odinga supporter, said before the emergency meeting at Chungwa House that Sifuna’s remarks were “disappointing and frustrating.” The emergency gathering, attended by senior ODM officials, was called specifically to respond to Sifuna’s comments and chart a way forward. The party plans to hold a press conference after the meeting to announce decisions concerning the secretary general’s position.

In the interview, Sifuna showed no fear of consequences, saying he would not be offended if removed from office. “I am the ODM secretary general with the longest tenure. I have eight years of service. I wouldn’t feel guilty if it were decided to remove me from the office,” he stated. This candid declaration hints at possible internal conflict brewing over the party’s future direction and its relationship with the government.

The emergency meeting marks a pivotal moment for ODM’s leadership unity, as members weigh whether Sifuna’s outspokenness undermines party discipline or signals a needed voice of dissent. How the party will handle this crisis remains unclear. Will Sifuna be forced out, or will ODM find a way to accommodate his criticism? The fallout could reshape ODM’s political strategy as the 2027 elections approach, leaving many questions unanswered.
