Sifuna Defies Raila, Plunges into Bungoma Power Wars as 2027 Storm Brews

A quiet rebellion is brewing within ODM, and its epicentre is none other than Raila Odinga's own secretary general, Edwin Sifuna. While Raila flirts with the idea of working with President Ruto, Sifuna is charting a different, riskier course—one that pits him against both the government and his party leader.

In a recent interview, Raila declared his temporary alliance with Ruto until 2027. But Sifuna, together with outspoken MPs like Babu Owino, has broken ranks, voicing stern opposition to the president’s administration. His defiance is not just limited to national politics—it is now fuelling political tremors in Western Kenya.

Sifuna has made repeated trips to Bungoma, publicly standing with MPs Jack Wamboka, Caleb Amisi, and Majimbo Kalasinga. This alliance appears to be a direct affront to Speaker Moses Wetangula’s influence in the region. Although Sifuna hasn’t explicitly joined the Tawe Movement, his criticism of Wetangula aligns him with leaders like George Natembeya and Boni Khalwale, who are all pushing for a political shake-up in the region.

Observers now say Sifuna's moves are not merely rebellious but calculated. His open criticism of Wetangula and silent distancing from Raila's pro-Ruto stance suggest an evolving ambition—possibly to position himself as a key figure in Western Kenya or beyond.

But Sifuna’s strategy has already drawn sharp responses from Raila loyalists, including Peter Kaluma and John Mbadi. Yet he remains unshaken. Is he laying the foundation for a new political frontier, or will the gamble cost him everything? For now, all eyes are watching.
