East African Legislative Assembly MP David Ole Sankok has raised a startling warning that has set social media abuzz. He fears a political alliance between ODM leader Raila Odinga and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua could seriously threaten President William Ruto’s re-election bid.
Sankok, a close ally of President Ruto, shared his concerns on Monday, noting that despite efforts by Ruto’s camp to sideline Raila, the ODM leader remains a significant force in Kenyan politics. He pointed to the failed attempt to secure Raila’s appointment as African Union Commission Chairperson, which would have temporarily removed him from the national political scene. With that option gone, Raila’s influence endures.
The MP warned that if Raila and Gachagua joined forces, it could reshape the political landscape ahead of the 2027 polls. “My biggest fear is a Raila-Gachagua deal,” Sankok said, sparking heated debate among Kenyans who are unsure if such an alliance is plausible given ODM’s past criticisms of Gachagua.
Just a day before Sankok’s post, Raila Odinga clarified his cooperation with the current government was strictly to maintain stability until the next election. He stressed future partnerships will be determined by ODM as a party, not by personal decisions.
Political analysts note that Kenya’s election history is rife with surprising alliances that often upend expectations. Whether Sankok’s warning signals genuine political maneuvering or mere speculation remains unclear. As the 2027 elections draw nearer, all eyes will be on Kenya’s evolving power dynamics and the potential for unexpected coalitions to emerge.
