Matiang’i Snubbed as Kikuyu Elders Endorse New Candidate Against Ruto in 2027

A silent storm is brewing in the Mt. Kenya region as power brokers quietly realign ahead of the 2027 presidential race. In a move that shocked many political observers, Kikuyu elders have bypassed high-profile figures like Fred Matiang’i in favour of a lesser-known contender.

The Agikuyu Council of Elders has publicly endorsed Augustus Kyalo Muli, leader of the National Liberal Party, urging him to unite the GEMA (Gikuyu, Embu, Meru) communities and build broader coalitions. Council Chairperson Wachira Kiago made the announcement following a closed-door meeting in Nairobi, stressing the need for a new political direction and regional cooperation. “We give our blessings to Muli,” Kiago declared, signalling a shift in the region’s political centre of gravity.

Matiang’i, recently backed by the Jubilee Party under former President Uhuru Kenyatta, was expected to dominate Mt. Kenya’s opposition space. But the surprise endorsement of Muli, combined with Rigathi Gachagua’s re-entry into the race under the Democratic Citizens Party, suggests a looming battle for dominance that could fracture the opposition.

Sources reveal that Muli has already initiated outreach to Eastern leaders, including Kalonzo Musyoka, in a strategic push to consolidate support beyond Mt. Kenya. Meanwhile, Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya and President William Ruto continue their own grassroots mobilisations, further intensifying the regional showdown.

With key figures clashing and elders charting new paths, the 2027 contest is quickly turning into a chessboard of alliances and betrayals. Yet unanswered is why Matiang’i, despite elite backing, was quietly bypassed—and whether he can recover lost ground in time.
