Kenya Kwanza Empowerment Drive Sparks Outrage Over Tiny Payouts

What was meant to be a beacon of hope has turned into a bitter disappointment for many Kenyans. The much-touted empowerment initiative by Kenya Kwanza is drawing criticism as beneficiaries claim they received as little as sixty-four shillings.

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki recently announced a three million shilling allocation from President Ruto at a public event, but many attendees say the funds never reached them. Widows like Sarah Gechebe say the paltry amounts given to their groups make a mockery of empowerment. “We were 31 widows and widowers but only got Ksh.2,000 to share. How is that supposed to help?” she asked. Others, like Rosemary Kemunto, claim to have witnessed large sums disappear before their eyes, leaving them empty-handed despite the pomp and promises.

Maurice Onsongo, a person living with a disability, added that supposed transport allowances were equally meagre. “We were 18 people and given Ksh.20,000. When you divide it, that’s hardly anything per person,” he said. In Machakos, the Masalo Young Group secretary, Rosa Paul, echoed these frustrations, stating they saw funds being brought in but never distributed.

These complaints come as the 2027 elections near, raising questions about the sincerity of political goodwill. While officials declare empowerment loudly, many beneficiaries say the reality is little more than symbolic handouts.

The government has yet to respond directly to these claims. As the backlash grows, Kenyans ask: Are these empowerment programs genuine or just political theatre? With elections approaching, how will Kenya Kwanza restore faith among disappointed citizens? The answer remains to be seen as the nation watches closely.
