A storm is quietly brewing behind the scenes as Kenyans speculate over who will challenge President William Ruto in 2027. The answer, according to political strategist Prof. Peter Kagwanja, may arrive sooner than expected—and it might shock the nation.

Speaking during an interview on Power and Politics, Kagwanja, who also serves as Deputy Party Leader of PLP, revealed that the opposition is not only alert but already shaping a formidable front. He hinted at a “surprise candidate” being groomed to unsettle the Kenya Kwanza axis, though he withheld specific names.

“There’s a strategy already on the table,” Kagwanja said. “People think the opposition is disorganised, but there are moves happening silently. Kagwanja claimed that despite public displays of unity, President Ruto and former DP Rigathi Gachagua are facing internal tension. He pointed to emerging cracks within Kenya Kwanza, warning the opposition to tread carefully as Ruto’s team continues to reinforce its hold ahead of the next election.

The political scholar added that Kenyans are closely observing leadership behaviour amid tough economic conditions. He believes public frustration may fuel support for a credible alternative, especially if the opposition gets its act together early enough.
