Tension is rising in Murang’a as powerful local voices issue a chilling ultimatum to National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah. The lawmaker has just 48 hours to publicly apologise for controversial remarks he made about Pastor Dorcas Rigathi—or face court action.
Speaking at a press briefing on Wednesday, officials from the Democratic for Citizens Party (DCP) slammed Ichung’wah for what they termed “cultural disrespect and personal insult” toward the wife of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. The Majority Leader had insinuated that Gachagua is being controlled by his wife, a comment that quickly ignited a firestorm online and within political circles.
“The statements were shameful and un-African,” one official said. “You do not mock a man’s wife in public and expect the community to stay silent. We want a full retraction and apology within two days, or we’ll seek redress in court.”
Pastor Dorcas, who recently returned from a two-month tour of the US with her husband, didn’t hold back in her response. “You cannot sit on a man like Rigathi,” she said. “He is the reason this country is awake. Even the President can’t stop talking about him.” Her words, though fiery, seemed aimed more at restoring pride than fueling further tension.
As pressure mounts, DCP leaders have also called on community elders to perform a cleansing ceremony, claiming Ichung’wah’s words dishonoured Kikuyu traditions. Human rights groups have been urged to intervene, while allies of Gachagua are reportedly mulling further steps.
With legal threats hanging over his head and public opinion turning hostile, all eyes are now on Ichung’wah. Will he bow to pressure or dig in deeper? The political silence from his camp leaves the next move a mystery.
