Headlines Today: Hot Political Shift as Raila Backs Ruto, Gachagua Allies Dispersed in Nakuru

Kenya’s political landscape took a fiery twist on Sunday as ODM leader Raila Odinga made a stunning declaration—he will support President William Ruto’s government until 2027. But the deal comes with a warning: no premature talk about succession before delivery on key promises.

Raila linked the Gen Z protests of 2024 to the government’s failure to implement the Nadco report. “The youth were echoing the same grievances we’ve been raising since last year,” he said. The statement marked a rare moment of alignment between former rivals—yet underscored how fragile the truce could be.

Tensions ran high in Nakuru as allies of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua were blocked from holding a rally. Led by DCP deputy leader Cleophas Malala and Senator John Methu, the group was met with police roadblocks and tear gas. Their attempt to regroup in Subukia ended in chaos as law enforcement dispersed the crowd.

Meanwhile, Siaya Governor James Orengo condemned the arrest of activist Boniface Mwangi, who is now facing terrorism charges linked to the June 25 protests. “This is absurd,” Orengo said on X, adding that the government was using anti-terror laws to suppress dissent.

At the same time, Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has emerged as a steady voice in the storm. His vocal defence of young protesters and calls for reform signal a quiet campaign ahead of 2027.

With Raila now walking a tightrope between support and scrutiny, and opposition figures regrouping, Kenyans are left wondering: is this a moment of unity—or the calm before a political storm?
