A tragic incident took place in Nairobi’s Central Business District on 17th June 2025 during protests against police brutality.
A street vendor, Boniface Mwangi Kariuki, was shot in the head at close range by a police officer while selling face masks.
The shooting occurred in front of journalists, and the graphic images taken have since spread widely online.
Despite the severe nature of his injuries, Kariuki survived and underwent emergency surgery in a Nairobi hospital.
The demonstrations were sparked by the recent controversial death of blogger Albert Ojwang, who died in police custody under mysterious circumstances after being accused of defamation.
This event intensified national outrage over what many see as ongoing issues of extrajudicial killings and excessive police force in Kenya.
Following public outcry, the officer involved in Kariuki’s shooting was arrested, although the authorities have yet to disclose the officer’s identity.
Kariuki’s father made his first public appearance since the incident by meeting with Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah, a prominent figure known for his human rights advocacy.
Omtatah offered his condolences and firmly criticised the actions of the police, vowing to continue pushing for accountability and justice. He also emphasised the urgent need for comprehensive reforms within the police force to address deep-rooted structural failings.
In response to Kariuki’s shooting and Ojwang’s death, more protests have been planned, including a major demonstration on 24th June 2025.
This march aims to honour victims of police violence and call for immediate reforms in law enforcement practices.
